National Championships

Last weekend it was the National Combined Event Championships at Bedford International Stadium. There were 40 entries in the senior men’s competition, which is  tremendous for the sport,  with competitors coming from all across the country.

I was really looking forward to this competition and to putting the hard training into action in a competitive situation.  Day 1 started with the 100m, my time wasn’t great at all running 11.54sec, well below my best.  A slow start out of the blocks really hampered the time.

Next came long jump which I haven’t done a great deal of work on and it showed! With a best jump of 5.74m, again well below my best!  There are lots of things to work on.  After long jump came shot putt, an event with which I have been struggling, so I was delighted when all the hard work paid off, everything clicked, and I threw a pb of 12.77m.

The last 2 events on Saturday were high jump and 400m. The high jump went well and I jumped 1.78m, a 3cm pb and I know there is much more to come in this event.  In the 400m I was very much off the pace running 54.4sec.   There is definitely a lot of room for improvement. Overall day 1 was fairly pleasing with 2 pb’s.

Day 2 started out with hurdles. Training for hurdles has been going well and I was very confident of delivering a big pb,  but it wasn’t to be.  I slipped out of the blocks making my stride pattern go way off course, I hit pretty much every hurdle, and finished with a disappointing 17.4 sec.

Up next was the discus where my training has been hit and miss.  I tried hard to put into practice everything my coach Martin had taught me, and the result was great!   I managed to pull out a 4m pb throwing 35.02m. My worst event by far is pole vault which came next, and it showed with me only clearing 3.03m.  Once again plenty of work to be done.

Then came javelin which is one of my strongest events and I managed another pb throwing 52.41m, which I was really  happy about. Then came the dreaded 1500m  where I managed to run 20 seconds quicker than my previous outing by running 5 min 28sec. A big improvement but I still have so much work to do here!

Overall I was very happy with my performance, 4pbs and lots of positives to take from the weekend. After a week of recovery I will back to training next Tuesday preparing for South of England Champs at the end of July.
